The Daily Mail reported that Newcastle sports director Paul Mitchell (pictured above) has stepped down immediately, and the club has arranged for Eddie Howe's nephew and signing director Steve Nixon to take over the relevant work.

Although the club announced last month that Mitchell would leave office with the agreement of both parties at the end of June, the Post learned that the 43-year-old director has now completed the handover. His term of office is less than one year and has not completed any first-team signing, and the selection of successors is being led by Nolan Partners.

According to last week's disclosure, Nottingham Forest executive Ross Wilson is one of the candidates, and former Arsenal assistant sports director Jason Eto will also be contacted by Nolan. The Post also revealed that former Liverpool technical director Julian Ward is also on the shortlist and the interview process is about to begin. During the transition period, the club appointed Andy Howe, the nephew of head coach Eddie Howe, to cooperate with Nixon to form a more competitive lineup for domestic and European events next season. Andy Howe joined the Magpies as the head of technical scouts in 2021 and was later promoted to the deputy head of first-team recruitment, playing a key role in the transfers of Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, Tonali and Liframento, and is highly valued by the club. Nixon and Andy Howe will share the responsibilities of Mitchell.

Newcastle's current signing targets include Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, Nottingham Forest winger Ellanda and Brighton striker Joao Pedro. Although the progress has been slow recently, personnel changes in the transfer team may accelerate the operation process.
