As we all know, dogs are different from humans. The skin of dogs has no sweat glands. They can only discharge most of the heat from the mouth by fast breathing, and a small part of the heat is discharged from the foot pads and a small amount of sweat. Therefore, under the influence of high temperature, high humidity and strong sunlight, the body's metabolism is strong, producing more heat and dissipating less heat, and heat accumulation in the body will cause meningeal congestion and central nervous system dysfunction.
Dogs are prone to heatstroke in the following situations:
1. Activate in strong sunlight, such as walking, training, and playing.
2. If the dog is placed in a closed room, in a dog cage, or in a car for too long, it will cause heat stroke due to excessive temperature, poor ventilation, and lack of drinking water.
3. Dogs with obese body, heart disease, thick hair, and lack of exercise are also prone to heatstroke.
Symptoms of heat stroke:
Body temperature rises sharply, reaching 40.5℃, rapid breathing develops to dyspnea, high hypoxia throughout the body, the conjunctiva, oral mucosa and tongue are brick-red, and then black and purple. Due to meningeal congestion and brain injury, the dog has increased cerebrospinal fluid and increased brain pressure, and the dog has systemic spasms, protruding eyes, unsteady walking, suddenly falls to the ground, twitches throughout the body, limbs are swimming, and white foam flows through the mouth. If not treated in time, they may die from pulmonary edema and heart failure.
Rescue measures:
If your dog has the above symptoms, it should be placed immediately in a cool and ventilated place, and put ice cubes on the dog's head, under the thighs, and the inner thighs (popsicles can be placed without ice). You can also rinse the whole body with cold water to cool it down, and immediately send it to the animal hospital.
Preventive measures:
1. Avoid dogs moving in strong sunlight. Even after 4 pm, you should move slowly in a place with shade of trees and avoid running too hard.
2. When going out for activities, bring enough drinking water and replenish water from time to time. Drinking adequate water is a good way to prevent heatstroke.
3. When taking a dog out, never leave it alone in the car, it will not work even if it takes a short time.
4. For long-haired dogs and thick-haired dogs, the hair should be shave off to improve the heat dissipation ability.
5. Fat dogs should pay attention to losing weight, because obese dogs produce high calories in hot weather and are more likely to have heat stroke!
